What if my insurance company will not give me the 10% discount for taking this course?

Every insurance company in New York State has to honor our course and give you the 10% discount on your collision, liability and PIP [Personal Injury Protection] insurance premiums for every vehicle in which you are the principal driver. This discount is not optional. Every insurance company has to give the discount to you each year for the next 3 years.

What if I'm already getting a driver's education discount?

This defensive driving course discount is in addition to most other auto insurance discounts (e.g. multiple cars, senior citizen, etc.) that you may be receiving now. Check with your insurance company about Driver's Ed discounts.

Can I take this course if I don't have my license?

As long as you have your New York State permit or your 9-digit motorist I.D. number, you can take our course and receive the point/insurance discount.

Should I take this course before or after I go to traffic court?

The points associated with a ticket are as of the date you were given the ticket NOT the court date. So it really does not matter if you have not gone to court yet. You can still take our course. In some situations, people have gone to our class and then told the judge that they took our class and really learned a lot. Whatever points the judge ends up giving you for your ticket will be as of the date you were stopped and given the ticket. NOTE: Our course reduces up to 4 points you have received within the past 18 months from the completion date of our course.

What effect does point reduction have on future tickets/points?

Point reduction applies only to points for violations occurring within the prior 18 months immediately before course completion. It does not affect points for earlier violations, and can NEVER be used as a 'credit' for future points.

After I complete the course, how do I receive the LICENSE POINT reduction?

Empire Safety Council will automatically notify the DMV that
you have completed the course. After course completion, a notation is made on your driving record in the DMV computer. If you accumulate 11 points on your driving record, the DMV computer then reduces up to FOUR POINTS from your total net points. You may take this course once every 18 months for point reduction benefits.

After I complete the course, how do I receive the INSURANCE reduction?

Empire Safety Council will mail you a completion certificate. Present this certificate to your insurance company/agent within 90 days of the course completion date for an immediate liability, PIP, and collision premium discount - retroactive to the date of course completion. You may take this course once every 36 months for insurance reduction benefits.

Will this course save me from getting my license suspended?

If you have received 3 speeding tickets within the past 18 months or if your license is already revoked or suspended, or if a violation point hearing has already been scheduled, taking our 6 Hr. course will NOT prevent that action.

What if I have 3 speeding tickets or a DWI?

Our class will NOT prevent mandatory license suspensions or revocations for violations such as DWI or three speeding violations within 18 months.

Can I keep repeating the course until all my points are reduced?

You may take the course only once every three years for insurance reduction benefits, and once every 18 months for point reduction.

What if more than one person's name is on the policy - who needs to completed the course?

The vehicle's principal operator needs to complete this 6 hr. Point/Insurance Reduction course. The insurance discount may be applied only once for each covered vehicle.
